Of course, you also can make the same argument in favor of notebooks, and notebooks cost considerably less than tablets. But tablets give you the ability to enter data while you hold the machine in one arm. The pressure-sensitive screens let you check off boxes with a stylus. And digital ink allows you to write notes. If those features are important to you, paying more for a tablet may be justified.

In the end, your choice of hardware boils down to personal preference. "Buy whatever helps you fully utilize your EHR software," says computer consultant Rosemarie Nelson in Syracuse. A tablet could be your answer, even if it's not yet America's favorite computer.
